دو پدر آلمانی به نامهای فالک ولسکی و دنیل کائرسماشر که این قلم را اختراع کرده و امیدوارند تا پایان ماه آینده ۱۸۰ هزار دلار از طریق ستادهای اینترنتی جمع کنند تا بتوان تا پایان سال این قلم را به تولید انبوه رساند. ایده ساخت این قلم دیجیتالی زمانی شکل گرفت که همسر فالک ولسکی متوجه شد که فرزندش هنگام نوشتن غلطهای املای متعددی دارد اما متوجه آن نمی شوند، این قلم در حال حاضر می تواند دانش آموز را از غلطهایی که در نوشتن دارد مطلع کند.

قلم دیجیتالی لرن استیفت دارای دو کارکرد اولیه است، یکی حالت صحیح نویسی است که اشتباهات املایی را گوشزد می کند و دیگری حالت خوشنویسی است که به نقصهای شکل حروف اشاره می کند. کاربر می تواند این قلم دیجیتالی را در سه نوع خودکار، خودنویس و مداد انتخاب کند. رایانه داخل این قلم بهسامانه سیستمعامل لینوکس مجهز است و یک مدار دارد که دربرگیرنده حسگر حرکتی، پردازنده، حافظه، WiFi و حالت لرزش است. مخترعان این دستگاه امیدوارند که ۲۰ تا ۱۰۰ واحد از آن طی ماه های آگوست و سپتامبر تولید شده و تولید انبوه تاپایان سال صورت بگیرد.
